General Usage
Nearly all ISBNs (except in the shopping
basket) can be 'clicked' on to obtain detailed bibliographic data and jacket
images if available. Certain other fields have been enabled as 'clickable'
hyperlinks to other pages, data, and functions, they are usually a lighter blue
colour, like this
(apart from the promotions area on the home page). Move your mouse over
highlighted words and if they change to 'underlined' they can be clicked on for
further information. For example clicking on the author name in the
'bestsellers' page will generate a search for titles by that author.
1. Creating an Account
The first time you visit our
site you will need to register in order to search for or order any publication.
Only bona fide Schools, Libraries and recognised Educational establishments and businesses are able to use the site. KBC Books offers significant trade discounts to valid customers within the educational community and requires that all registrations be authorised by us before access to the site is approved. You will need to enter your personal information – name, address, institution/organization,
phone, email address, username and password. 1st line of address, postcode, phone number
and an email address are *required* fields. Please note it is very helpful to provide details of your organization wherever possible to help with our verification process.
The registration/authorisation process will be completed as soon as possible within KBC's normal working hours (0900 - 1700, Monday - Friday, excluding UK bank holidays) but may take up to 24 hours to complete. After authorization by our customer services team we will email you to confirm
your username and password. When you next return to the site, you will only need
to enter your username and password.
Important : please remember that your
email address must be valid, otherwise you will fail to receive order
confirmation messages and other important communications.
Your account details may be updated at any
time by clicking on the 'Change your details' link on the Home page, and
entering the corrected fields.

Search Tips
Basic Search
Enter an Author and/or Title or Title
keywords, or ISBN/barcode to
search for a book. Author and Title entries will also provide a "keyword"
text search, as well as standard full title search- for example, entering "harry potter goblet" will result in hits for
all titles
containing "harry", "potter", and "goblet". The Title search will search the Title/Subtitle and Series fields for any words entered.
The wildcard '*' character may be used to widen the possible search results, e.g. entering 'carp*' will return hits for 'carp', 'carpet', 'carpenter' etc.
Note: The default Availability filter
for simple search is to return a list of any 'In Print' or 'Not Yet Publshed'
Titles. To search for 'Out of Print' or other Availability codes, use Advanced
Search.
Each search may produce up to 500+ search
results. Search results greater than 100 items are fairly
unmanageable to sift through, and we would recommend narrowing the search
criteria with additional keywords.
Advanced Search Terms
-
Availability field: allows
you to narrow the search to out of print, in print or new titles
-
Publisher: filters by publisher/imprint name, for example, "Heinemann"
-
Educational Purpose: finds titles coded by
Nielsen as, for example, "National Curriculum Key Stage 1"
-
Publication Date: finds titles published in the last/next week/month/3 months (default is all dates)
-
Description/Keywords: allows
you to broaden your search by looking for keyword text anywhere in our
bibliographic database- eg Title, Description, Author, etc.
-
Format: is particularly
useful if you are looking for e-learning materials such as CD-Roms, DVD or
audio material -
BIC Subject code allows filtering of results by relevant BIC subject/genre classifications.
BIC codes with a stem of 'Y' (Childrens) are further expanded to provide precise targetting.
-
Sort by ISBN, Title or
Price to view the result list in your preferred sequence
Each advanced search will produce a
maximum of 500 search results, and may take a while to complete for a
complex query against our full bibliographic data. Search results can be
reduced by narrowing the search criteria.
